Many people have been using Hoodia for a number of years now. Hoodia Gordonii is a cactus like plant that grows mostly in South Africa and Namibia. It is not the most attractive of plants, but it does have a huge reputation in the field of modern medicine, particularly in the area of diet suppressants, in which area it is generally believed to be very effective.

In the last few years Hoodia has been the subject of what one could only call heavy marketing. This marketing has been based entirely on the area of weight loss and has been incredibly successful, with many people taking up the drug to combat issues such as simple weight loss. Other people have decided to use the drug to take action against obesity, whereby the sufferer is dangerously overweight. In both situations the drug has proved highly effective.

There has always been an exceptionally huge demand for diet pills. After certain diet pills were banned, Hoodia grew in popularity. It is now very common to see marketing campaigns for the drug, offering a complete dieting solution.

The indigenous South African tribesmen were said to use the plant to help them deal with the effects of long term hunger. They would often have to trek for miles across the Kalahari desert, and cutting off the stems of the plant and eating these would allow their appetite to be suppressed, therefore enabling them to last a lot longer on their treks without eating. While the Hoodia plant is often called a cactus plant due to its appearance, it is actually a succulent plant.

There are actually over 13 types of Hoodia. The only active ingredient present in all of these types is an agent commonly referred to as P57. This is the agent that is used for suppressing hunger.

Back in 1937, a Dutchman witnessed some indigenous South Africans using the Hoodia plant to suppress their appetite. This is where the story of the plant begins. Tests were done in South African labs on animals, the reports that came out of the tests confirmed what the scientists believed to be true, that one can lose weight if one takes Hoodia.

P57 is a steroidal Glycoside. A British firm called Phytopharm gained the rights to use P57, and quickly spent millions on researching it. Pfizer were involved at one stage in developing the drug further.

The excitement that surrounds Hoodia really began to take off due to a Sixty Minutes documentary, which had correspondents travelling to Africa to find the Hoodia plant. The correspondent who hosted the feature tasted the plant, and stated on television that she lost the need to eat or drink for the entire day. Thus the popularity of the drug was born.

One of the first major studies on Hoodia was centred on the research done with the drug and rats. Rats that were treated with the drug in laboratories were treated by injection. There was a placebo group that were injected with a fake drug. The rats that were injected with Hoodia actually showed signs of having a suppressed appetite, therefore adding weight tot the theory that the drug worked in this way.

Phytopharm carried out some studies on humans. Eighteen volunteers were subjected to a test of the drug. Appetite was suppressed in these subjects to the extent that 1000 calories less a day were consumed by those who had taken Hoodia Gordonii, as opposed to the placebo group, who had not.

There are some concerns that, at the moment, it is not always possible to be absolutely certain tat what you are buying is pure Hoodia. This is due to the emergence of some less than reputable companies in recent years, which claim to be selling the drug but are instead selling something quite different. There are ways to tell whether or not you are buying the real drug, and these will be covered in a later article.
Hoodia Gordonii has rightfully taken its place as the world’s major diet suppressant. It is used by millions around the world to combat weight gain, and has therefore changed countless numbers of lives. It has become a blockbuster drug.

Hoodia Gordonii, or ‘Hoodia’, is an immensely popular diet product that one can buy either online or in health food shops. Herbal based, it is generally viewed as one of the major appetite suppressants available on the market today. First used by indigenous South African tribesmen who appreciated the properties of the drug, because it helped them suppress hunger on long hunting treks, it has now become one of the blockbuster diet products.

However, due to its success, Hoodia has also become a drug that has been ‘faked’. The growing concern is that many vendors, whether online or in the high street, are not selling Hoodia, but are instead offering a product that is at best useless and at worst damaging to the consumer.

If you actually search online for Hoodia in the form of a tablet, you will find literally hundreds of sites that offer the drug, while at the same time stating that you should not buy from their competitors, who are offering fake Hoodia. The market has thus become quite saturated with companies who are offering counterfeit products, which undermines the good work done by those companies that offer Hoodia legitimately.

It is generally believed that a possible 80% of the Hoodia that is available on the market today is not real, but is instead a fake version of the drug. The reason why there is counterfeit Hoodia on the market is due to the fact that Hoodia is actually very difficult to grow. Remember that it grows on a desert area. The plant itself can take four to five years to grow to the point where it can be used din the drug. Makers of the drug and sellers of the drug are therefore in a market where the product is not always readily available. Therefore, fake Hoodia prevails.

The Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) have made it so that trading in Hoodia is difficult too. There are strict controls on Hoodia, and there have been such controls in place since 2004. These controls mean that one cannot trade in Hoodia unless one has a certificate. However, it is suspected that some unscrupulous traders trade with fake certificates.

One other problem associated with Hoodia is that is generally agreed to be very difficult indeed to clarify whether a Hoodia product actually contains the ingredients found in the herb.

There are ways to know that what you are buying is legitimate. Essentially, Hoodia contains p57. This is the bottom line, and if what you are taking contains this vital ingredient, you are taking Hoodia. The p57 agent is proven to work against the appetite.

When one bears in mind that there are no real medical problems associated with use of the plant and its extracts among the original users, one can see that the drug is actually every safe.

The indigenous South African people used the drug on a regular basis many years ago, and continue to do so today. There have been no ill health events reported, and users of the plant generally agree that it does a very good job of suppressing their appetite.

Hoodia is of course recommended to be used alongside medical advice. Anyone who does not consult with a doctor when taking on a new diet plan is running the risk of damaging their bodies anyway. Using Hoodia is only recommended when you have consulted with your physician, because they know your dietary requirements and your history. There is absolutely no substitute for good diet and good exercise combined, and Hoodia has a place in this scheme, but consult with your doctor, and see what he or she has to say.
The first thing to do when considering buying a Hoodia product is to look for the CITES documentation that should come along with the product. If this is present, whether in virtual form or in the packaging, you have a genuine product. Also bear in mind that real Hoodia Gordonii looks like a fine brown powder when it is presented as a medicine. This of course does not resemble the original plant in any way. Again, use the product wisely, and if you are in any doubt about any aspect of your Hoodia experience, consult your doctor.

Hoodia Gordonii is a plant that grows in South Africa and Namibia. The flowers of the plant are hardly attractive, and are generally described as smelling like rotten meat. However, the plant has gained quite a reputation in medicine today, and is very popular with a number of client groups and consumers.

The indigenous peoples of South Africa have long used the Hoodia plant for a number of purposes. Indigestion was one of the most common ailments treated by Hoodia Gordonii. The indigenous South Africans used the plant to treat this in rather a successful way. Indigestion is characterised by sharp and recurrent pain in the upper abdomen, and if not treated quickly, can lead to further complications that are quite dangerous. Indigestion can be accompanied by bloating and heartburn. As people get older (over 55), if they suffer from indigestion they are often referred to doctors due to the fact that prolonged indigestion can sometimes become something more serious, in some cases being the first sign of cancer.

Other infections were treated by the South Africans by using the Hoodia plant. However, the biggest and most well known purpose for the plant being used is that of an appetite suppressant.

The Kalahari Desert is a large, arid desert area in the South Eastern area of Africa. Incredibly dangerous to spend too long in, and with some unforgiving temperatures and generally parched conditions, the desert plays a huge part in the history of the Hoodia plant.

The indigenous South African people used the Hoodia plant to help suppress their appetite when making their way across the desert on a long trek. The name Kalahari comes from a phrase that means great thirst and this is a very apt description. A vast area of the place is covered by red sand, without any permanent water source for miles. The people of South Africa would regularly use the plant to fight off hunger pangs.

This effect, of course, had great potential in modern medicine. The South African Institute for Scientific and Industrial research investigated the elements within Hoodia Gordonii that helped to suppress the human appetite and decided to patent it. The patent for the one agent, P57, that helped to cut down on hunger pangs, was raised in 1996. With this patent in place, they then had the ability to allow other companies to use the agent in their own products. This meant that the agent from Hoodia could now be used as an appetite suppressant in products made by companies around the world.

Appetite suppressants simply cause the user to eat less. This means that they can be used in dieting plans and regimes, and for other medical reasons. In the clinical arena, appetite suppressants have been used in the short term to help with tackling obesity. This means that sufferer who have issues regarding their weight and their actual physical safety have used such suppressants to combat the problem.

One unfortunate problem associated with the use of appetite suppressant is that they carry effects that are very similar to those exited by amphetamines. This means that some users have used them for these effects.

The UK based firm Phytopharm has a licence to offer the drug, and they set up business with Pfizer to develop and market it as an appetite suppressant.

The Kalahari Bushmen have known and understood the effects of the hoodia gordonii plant for many centuries. They would consume the extract of the plant before heading off on hunting excursions for days at a time. The plant was used to suppress hunger as well as thirst while they were hunting. It seemed to increase their energy and was thought to have some medicinal qualities such as being a deterrent to infections.

The Bushmen of the Kalahari are known as one of the oldest tribes, certainly one of the most primitive and are recognized for their survival skills in the hot, unforgiving desert. They may also be identified for their “trance dancing” and unique rock art. The ancestral history of the traditional Kalahari tribesmen can be traced back about twenty seven thousand years based on rock drawings that have been located and studied.

Hoodia gordonii was first discovered by western eyes in 1779 by a British Colonel in and around the Orange River and was studied and painted by him. It was recognized as belonging to the Succulent Stapelia variety of cactus. The year 1937 was when an anthropologist of Dutch heritage who studied the Kalahari bushmen, now known as the San People, realized that after they were sucking on the root of a succulent plant, the tribesmen would not eat for the duration of a two or three day hunting expedition. They instead would subsist on these hoodia gordonii roots to stem their hunger and thirst.

For many centuries, the San people used the hoodia gordonii plant as a treatment for indigestion and for treating small infections when they occurred but the main use was of more interest to westerners. The Bushmen used the meaty portion of the hoodia plant as an appetite suppressant when they ventured out on survival trips to hunt and feed their families. This particular use was worthy of a more serious look.

In 1977 The CSIR or the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, recognized the essential ingredient in hoodia gordonii responsible for suppressing the appetite and it was named P57. It was nearly twenty years later before a patent was awarded. The South Africans then approved the British based Pharmaceutical company Phytopharm the right to license it. Phytopharm worked in partnership with pharmaceutical heavyweight Pfizer to study and segregate the important components from the hoodia extract and synthesize them for mass production as an appetite suppressant.

In 2002 Pfizer let the rights go to the main element of hoodia gordonii. Some believed that for a company such as Pfizer to release the rights of such a promising appetite suppressant could only mean they found the evidence inconclusive or perhaps without merit at all as an oral supplement. Pfizer on the contrary said they ceased interest when it was determined that the problem of synthesizing P57 made it inconvenient to continue. Insiders have stated that there was some concern that certain components of the P57 had adverse effects on the liver and it would have been necessary to extend the research to intolerable levels in order to seek and attain FDA approval. This is an indication from the source that until further study is completed on hoodia those seeking to lose weight using hoodia should be very careful.

Finally in 2002 the CSIR indentified the San tribesmen as rights holders of hoodia gordonii which would give them a percentage of any profits and marketing spin offs as a result of the sales of hoodia. Hoodia Gordonii works in quite a complex way. The extract contains something called p57, a glycoside. This glycoside holds the key to the effectiveness of Hoodia in managing the diet of the user. Brown University medical School published the first major study of the effect of p57 on an area of the human brain called the hypothalamus. The glycoside p57 affects the nerves in the hypothalamus, specifically the area that monitors blood sugar levels.

When blood glucose levels are low, our brain registers this fact, and tells us that we are hungry. This is an almost instantaneous effect. When the blood glucose stabilises, our brain tells us we are not hungry.
The p57 element in Hoodia actually works to convince the brain that we are not hungry through stabilising blood glucose levels, even when we do not eat. The message is the same; we are told that we are not hungry, even when not a morsel of food has passed our lips. Thus the brain sends out a strong signal to the rest of the body that we are not hungry, and the effect of the appetite being suppressed has been achieved.

Other appetite suppressants do not work in this way. They often provide a stimulus, which can make a person feel more energetic and less hungry. The problem with stimulants is that they work with some people and not others. They can actually make people feel anxious rather than calm and in control. They sometimes do nothing to reduce the feelings of hunger. People who have used Hoodia Gordonii have reported that there are no feelings of anxiety and that there are no feelings of hunger.
