How Hoodia Gordonii became known in the Western World
The plant has since long been used. It was only after the late 1930’s that Hoodia Gordonii became known to the western world. A Dutch anthropologist was actually studying the culture of the San Bushmen. In his very study, he came across the plant (hoodia Gordonii) and found that it was being used as a hunger suppressant. Later, in 1963, the plant was critically evaluated by South African laboratories but mainly on animals.
A Venture was thereafter formed among Scientists from both South Africa and Britain (Phytopharm Company). They worked in collaboration through-out the research. The research team had indentified an active molecule (steroide glycoside) which was effectively named P57. This was officially patented, 1995. The favorable finding about Hoodia motivated Phytopharm to spend extensive amounts on research which exceeded the $20 millions barrel. There was high scope for the substance to be an effective treatment against obesity. This actually motivated Pfizer in 1998, to attain sub-licensed right. It was issued for a sum of $21 million but was temporary and they returned the right to Phytopharm. The company then concretized an agreement with Unilever in 2004 to market its Hoodia Gordonii products in forms of diet bars. The product has not yet been released on the market following the venture (Date of verification 2007).
