It is true that Hoodia is used in some diet pills to suppress appetite in users and to reduce gastric acid, but, when the plant was first discovered it was used by the South Africans to cure indigestion and treat infections.
What is Hoodia Gordonii?
Hoodia Gordonii is a plant that is found in South Africa and Namibia, the plant has no leaves and is spiny succulent plant. The flowers on this plant smell like rotten meat and is mostly pollinated by flies.
Hoodia Gordonii has medical uses such as the power to treat indigestion and infections. The people of South Africa would eat the meat of the plant before going on long hunting trips to the Kalahari Desert because of its ability to suppress the appetite. While on these long hunting trips, the South Africans wouldn’t have much to eat; this is where the Hoodia Gordonii plant comes in.
The Hoodia Gordonii plant is able to treat indigestion because it effectively lowers gastric acid in the stomach, in turn making the tummy feel better.
Today Hoodia Gordonii is mainly used to suppress appetite in those taking dieting medications that contain the herb.
The history of Hoodia Gordonii
In 1937, a Dutch anthropologist was studying the San Bushmen of South Africa and saw that they would use Hoodia Gordonii to suppress appetites when they would go on long hunting trips. Then in 1963 the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research began studying Hoodia and found that lab rats and other lab animals would lose weight after they were given Hoodia Gordonii.
The scientists in South Africa started working with a British company called Phytopharm, together they isolated what they believed was the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii, steroidal glycoside, which they named P57.
In 1995 they received a patent and licensed P57 to Phytopharm; they have spent more than $20 million researching Hoodia.
In 1998 the pharmaceutical company Pfizer had the sub-license rights to develop P57 for $21 million. Pfizer then returned the right to Hoodia Gordonii back to Phytopharm and is now working with another company.
Hoodia Gordonii was shown on Oprha and 60 minutes, the people that tried the plant said that they had no desire to eat or drink for the rest of the day and experienced no immediate side effects.
How does Hoodia Gordonii work?
Hoodia works to make you feel physically less hungry, it is able to do this by signaling the brain and telling it you are full. Normally when you eat the food is broken down into a glucose form and the glucose signals the brain that you are full. The P57 is able to mimic the glucose effects in the brain causing you to stop eating and not desire food.
Hoodia also works to break your emotional attachment to food, not only does Hoodia make you feel fuller, it also shuts off your desire to eat causing you to make healthier food choices. You won’t eat cookies and chips because you don’t feel that you need that comfort food. Instead when you do eat, you will make healthy choices such as carrots, apples, and other healthy foods.
Hoodia does not guarantee this effect in everyone; you should always discuss taking Hoodia with your doctor before you start taking it. You must also exercise and make healthy food choices in order for Hoodia to work.
